I chose 'Paper' because It seemed like an odd theme to explore through photography and I liked the look of some of the photographs that I viewed especially the ones from Brassai. I think that this theme will challenge me, and push me out of my comfort zone. I tend to take photographs that are simple and of portraits mainly. This will allow me to take more experimental photographs.
My plan
My plan is to experiment with lots of different materials and I want to experiment with other materials such as paper, string, and mirrors in order to complement and contrast the paper. I want to find a way of using colour into my work too.
For this photoshoot I focused on going around the school and taking photographs of paper, the second time I went out to take pictures of paper was better than the first because when I started taking the photographs I didn't really understand what I was supposed to do? was I just taking pictures of paper? was I doing it from different angles?,was I only supposed to take photos of certain parts of the paper?). Overall I think the images turned out well with the time that I was given. I think I did well for my first shoot however there is always room for improvement. by taking all of these images I have a couple ideas on what I can do, for example: splatting paint over plain paper, using pencils for shading. How could I improve? . Focusing on a certain part of the paper .focusing more on different angles . making sure only the paper is in the from and nothing else.
Out of all the images I took, I think the eight above are the best ones for multiple reasons, the first image is very different from the rest because that is the only image with reflection. The second one I really like because of the colour, the little bits of blue make the paper stand out and make it look bold.I like these images because on some of them you have to look close to see what it is. In my eyes the best image is number 5 because there is nothing in the background, and I like how there is only half of the tape shaded in.
the next step: my next step could be making a piece using materials that contain paper, or making a sculpture using the images I have taken.
I am really happy with the way the photographs turned out, I am happy with the different angles. Using angles make my work look better especially where i am working with paper, using multiple angles can make it easier to notice shadows. I could've done better on the first couple of images however they turned out well. The next step: my next step could be focusing on curls, like the images above and starting to include more patterns and colours.
These images are the best ones from the photoshoot, I like the way the parts of it are out of focus. I like how there is blue on the first image, in my opinion the blue makes the image better and pulls it all together.
Artist research:
"Jerry Reed is an English photographer who claims his objective is to sustain the interest of the viewer through his photographs. He focuses heavily on a contrast in the shadows from the light on the paper, giving a very two-toned effect. Reed states he was inspired by Francis Bruguiere's paper work and is working on his own three year project "comprised of twenty-six images". "Francis Bruguiere was an American photographer born in 1879. He moved to London in 1928 where he began to experiment with paper cut forms and how light effected the paper." source from - "https://phalseyphotography.weebly.com/abstract-forms.html"
I am not happy with the way this photoshoot came out because the majority of the images include white tissue paper which is very hard to see. However there was images that came out really well which I was really happy how they turned out.
the three images are the best images out of the whole photoshoot, because I like how there is colour, and the white background which makes the colours look more bold. What makes these images stand out from all the other photographs is how the paper is curled, and how there is lots of negative space in the background. the next step: my next step could be using different backgrounds and slowly introducing objects that will compliment the paper.
